The Big Picture

SuperKids looked at four math software packages for young students in this comparison, and all were rated as good or better. All combine some form of entertaining activity with math practice or learning. But don't allow their similar overall ratings to lull you into indifference in your purchase decision. These programs are good for different reasons, and for different types of children. Read below for a snapshot of their differences, then click on the titles that interest you to see what our parent, teacher, and kid reviewers had to say.

Number Maze [for ages 5 - 12] from Great Wave Software, is the most serious math skills program of this group. Users breach barriers in a sequence of mazes by solving math problems. The program incorporates individual child tracking, frequent rewards, and a text-to-speech capability for word problems (in the Mac version) that enables use by pre-readers. This program will be attractive to a broad range of children, but especially those that like mazes and problem solving.
Math Munchers Deluxe [for ages 8 - 12] from MECC, is a math facts drill program cleverly disguised as a TV game show. Users select correct answers from multiple choices while under the threat of being gobbled up by Troggles. This program will be most attractive to children who like challenges and are quick thinkers.
Math Blaster 1: In Search of Spot [for ages 6 - 12] from Davidson, is a video arcade-style math facts game. Success in the mission to rescue Spot is a joint function of math ability, and hand-eye-mouse coordination. This program will be most attractive to children who like video games.
Math Rabbit [for ages 4 - 7] from The Learning Company, is the best introductory math program of the four evaluated here. Four different games set at a circus deal with counting, matching, and simple addition and subtraction. If your child has the ability to count and recognize numbers, he/she is ready for Math Rabbit.

SuperKids also took a look on another occasion, at a double-CD package released by Maxis, containing Zark and the Search for Symbols, and Zark and the Quest for Patterns. [for ages 6 - 9] The program creatively illustrates the existence of patterns in music, art and numbers, as well as the typical geometric shapes we all remember. Four different adventures, each with three difficulty levels, provide lots of learning opportunities.
