Math Software -- The Big Picture

SuperKids' reviewers looked at several creative new Math Software programs this month. Click on the titles to see the complete reviews.

  • Transition Math [for ages 4 to 6] from School Zone Publishing, is appropriate for accelerated Kindergarten and/or First Grade students. It succinctly covers a variety of necessary math skills.

  • Grade 1 Math [for ages 6 to 7] from School Zone Publishing, like its sibling product above, is a math reinforcement and acceleration program. It doesn't waste a lot of time with fancy introductions. Nonetheless, it provides sufficient rewards and study breaks to appeal to kids.

  • Grade 2 Math [for ages 6 to 7] from School Zone Publishing, is an electronic workbook for second grade math, reviewing and practicing skills which range from single digit subtraction and addition to double and triple digit addition and subtraction with borrowing and carrying numbers. Heavy on drills.

  • Math & Music [for ages 11 to 18] from Wildridge Software, is an excellent introduction to the physics of waves, the biology of hearing, algebra and trignometry.
  • M&M's: The Lost Formulas [for ages 5 to 10] from Simon & Schuster Interactive, provides simple math facts practice opportunities within the context of a beautifully animated video arcade game.
  • Robob’s Cubetronic Quizimajig [for ages 3 to adult] from Ohio Distinctive Software, trains users to match simple shapes, and then to replicate complex patterns.
  • Beat the Calculator [for ages 7 and up] from ABATEC Educational Software, is designed to improve a person’s skills at mental math. Good for strong math students, but weaker or less confident students will require adult support and positive feedback.
