The Charles W. Morgan - Voyages of the Past, Present & Future CD-ROM is an interactive, multimedia lesson on the history of whaling, through the perspective of a single ship. That ship, the Charles W. Morgan, is the sole surviving wooden whaling ship in the world. Built in 1840 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, it was once one of thousands of hunting ships that plied the waters around the world. Over one hundred feet long, and weighing over 300 tons, it was a factory ship, and would stay at sea for two to five years at a time.

The Charles W. Morgan story is well told, through a combination of videos, photos, and narration. Viewers will learn why whaling was practiced, how whales were hunted, and about the crews that hunted them.

The program is laid out in four basic chapters that can be accessed in any order. Each chapter has an introductory page with a handful of questions listed - clicking on one will provide a narrated response, accompanied by a multimedia display. Most are short, lasting only several minutes, but adequately covering the material at an introductory level, in an interesting manner.

Charles W. Morgan takes an educational approach to the topic of whaling. Students interested in history will find the program more interesting than a textbook. Program re-use will be limited, because of the depth of the material and the effective presentation style. Charles W. Morgan includes four activities that while game-like, are not likely to be as mesmerizing as a video game. They include a picure/term matching game, a hidden word game, a nautical board game, and a section on knot-tying.

Charles W. Morgan runs direct from the CD-ROM, without requiring installation on the user's hard drive. Program navigation is intuitive and simple, with onscreen help always just a click away.

Charles W. Morgan is best-suited for history buffs, homeschoolers, and classroom use.
